Ozzi Kleen

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is the only 100% aerobic home sewage treatment system allowing you to recycle your waste water and use it for irrigation.

A home sewage treatment system can also be referred to as a home sewage treatment plant (HSTP), waste water treatment system, sewage treatment unit (STU), aerated treatment unit (ATU), aerated waste water treatment system (AWTS), on-site sewage management system (OSMS) or on-site sewage facilities (OSSF).

Types of Waste Water Systems

There are two types of sewage treatment processes; (1) Aerobic (or non-septic) and (2) Anaerobic (or septic). Aerobic treatment is a process that uses air or oxygen to help bacteria degrade waste water and other pollutants. Anaerobic treatment is a process where waste water is broken down by micro-organisms without the aid of dissolved oxygen.

The principle behind the aerobic treatment process is simple. By keeping the organic waste matter oxygenated, the naturally occurring bacteria are kept alive. These bacteria, called aerobic bacteria, are very aggressive in feeding on waste, making the treatment process highly effective and efficient. This allows breakdown to occur in a matter of hours.

In the anaerobic treatment process the bacteria present, called anaerobic bacteria, have to break down waste in the absence of oxygen. This process relies on the slow decay of organic matter into smaller digestible constituents and can take up to 3 months to complete.

Anaerobic bacteria are not only less active than aerobic bacteria, they are far more fragile. Inorganic compounds, such as soaps, household cleaners and disinfectants that are commonly used in the home can quickly upset the bacteria, resulting in poor treatment performance.

How does an Ozzi Kleen Sewage Treatment System Work?

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system uses activated sludge in what is known as the IDEA process. IDEA or Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration process treats sewage through cyclic periods of extended aeration, settling and removal of clean effluent via a decanter (see Diagram 1). Most modern town and industrial sewage treatment plants in Australia and around the world utilise some form of aerobic treatment. The patented Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is the only residential sewage treatment system available on the market that is 100% aerobic.

Ozzi Kleen Sewage Treatment Process

(Diagram - Ozzi Kleen Sewage Treatment Process)

1. Raw Water

Household waste water from toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and laundries enter the single tank treatment system.

2. 100% Aeration Cycle

The raw water enters the single tank where it is oxygenated via an aerator. This keeps the naturally occurring aerobic bacteria found in the sewage alive, which in turn actively feeds and rapidly breaks down the waste. This aerobic environment is provided for micro-organisms which oxidise the organic waste while a balance between the air feed and the organic/hydraulic load is maintained. There is no anaerobic or septic process involved with an Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system.

3. Settling Cycle

After the aeration cycle has been completed there is a short period where aeration ceases to allow solids to settle. This results in a layer of clear water (effluent) at the top of the aeration tank ready for decanting.

4. Clear Water Ready for Irrigating

Once the settling period has elapsed, the decanter draws off the clear effluent and passes it through a chlorinator prior to storage in the effluent tank to ensure disinfection of pathogenic organisms. The effluent pump will then pump out disinfected effluent for recycling to your irrigation area.

The Ozzi Kleen Advantage

100% aerobic or oxygen treatment

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is the only sewage treatment system that uses a 100% aerobic or atmospheric oxygen treatment process. This process is entirely natural and speeds up the natural process. It is this process that sets the Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system apart.

No septic processors

No septic process at all is involved with an Ozzi Kleen system.

Efficient and Cost Effective

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system has gained an excellent reputation for being efficient in treating household waste water. Operating on a cyclic process means the Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system aerator runs for approximately 12 hours per day, significantly reducing your overall running costs, while increasing the aerator's life-span. Ozzi Kleen is one of the most economical residential wastewater treatment plant you can buy, as well as one of the most efficient. The cost to run an Ozzi Kleen system is approximately 35 to 40 cents a day depending on the cost of your electricity.

Reliable

Years of research and development by our dedicated R&D team has produced a system that you can rely on. The advanced IDEA technology, which is unique to the Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system, is what makes the Ozzi Kleen system so reliable, when used in accordance to the manufacturer's instructions. No sewage treatment system is designed to handle objects such as nappies, baby wipes, feminine, hygiene products and other foreign matter.

Handles common household cleaning agents and antibiotics

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is capable of handling common household cleaning agents, such as disinfectants, bleaches, etc., as well as antibiotics. This allows you to go about your normal day-to-day activities with peace of mind. Cleaning products need to be used in accordance with manufactures instructions as the system is not designed to process cleaning agents in commercial quantities or strengths. Please contact our staff or your local distributor if you have a query regarding the use of special cleaning agents or medications.

Produces clear water for reuse in irrigation

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system consistently produces high quality effluent for irrigation that meets all State and Territory effluent quality guidelines. Irrigation can be either surface or sub-surface, depending on your Local Authority requirements. A geotechnical report can be obtained to outline the requirements of your Local Authority and also provide guidance as to where the irrigation should be installed for maximum effectiveness.

Nutrient Reduction (advanced) model available

The advanced model (RP10A) has the added benefit of nutrient reduction. This means that the quality of the treated water from the advanced system is to a higher standard, making it suitable for reuse in environmentally restricted applications. The advanced system is ideal for highly sensitive catchment areas, canal blocks, small size blocks and reduced buffer zones.

Servicing

All residential sewage treatment systems are required by Local Authorities to be serviced quarterly. It is Local Authorities who enforce these requirements. It is highly recommended that Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment systems be serviced by an Ozzi Kleen accredited Green Card technician. All accredited technicians are highly trained and are required to undergo ongoing training to ensure you are provided with the best possible service in a timely, safe and effective manner. quarterly services in many ways offers you a preventive maintenance schedule which can help improve equipment life and ensure that your system is running at its optimum. It's a little like checking the oil and tyre pressure of your vehicle.

Safe

An Ozzi Kleen system has been designed with your family's safety in mind. Every system is fitted with tamper proof child fasteners to eliminate any danger posed to children, adults and animals. Warming signs for the irrigation area are provided for all systems and the electrical components are all housed in a secure motor box.

Environmentally friendly

A major by-product of the anaerobic process is the release of methane into the atmosphere. In contrast, only carbon dioxide is produce during aerobic treatment. Methane has greater than 20 times the global warming potential as carbon dioxide, and has been shown to have significant negative environmental effects2.

Single lightweight durable tank

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is one of the smallest and lightest sewage treatment systems available, measuring 2.7m high and 1.95m in diameter and weighing approximately 400kg. An Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is made of polyethylene which weight for weight is 100 times stronger than concrete and has a 500 year half life. The Ozzi Kleen one piece tank is completely seamless - there is no risk of seepage, leaking or root intrusion. It is recommended that non-invasive plants surround the sewage treatment system as the roots of invasive plants may penetrate pipes leading into the system.

One single lightweight tank reduces the cost of transportation to site as an Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system can easily be transported in the back of most standard Utes and trailers. The cost of installation is further reduced as only one excavated hole is required.

Easy to install and maintain

The system can be installed quickly, easily and economically by a single 3 tonne excavator, even on sites with severely restricted access such as sloped or hard to access sites. No crane is required.

Non obtrusive

When installed in your garden, only the compact, unobtrusive, low-level control box is visible, and even that can be easily hidden by plants. Ozzi Kleen recommends planting shrubs or plants with non-invasive roots around the sewage treatment system. Please keep in mind that your system will need to be accessed for servicing. It is therefore recommended that any landscaping around the system keeps in mind accessibility to the system.

Ozzi Kleen sewage treatments systems are designed to produce low noise emissions. All mechanical equipment is housed within the motor box and securely fastened to reduce noise from machine vibrations. Linear diaphragm blowers are installed in all our systems due to their low noise characteristics (as opposed to roots type blowers). These design features mean the system is quite enough to be installed close to the home if desired.

Robust

If you love entertaining or enjoy a spa bath, the Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system will cope with variations of raw water from such items as spa baths or increased numbers of people while entertaining. The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system treats up to 2,000 litres of waste water every day. This is equivalent to 10 persons using 200 litres of water each day.

The trusted name in Sewage Treatment Systems

The Ozzi Kleen story began in 1983, when the first sewage treatment system started being tested in the back yard of the founder and owner, Mal Close. Mal had been working in the sewage treatment industry for 28 years and had become frustrated using a septic system on his non-sewerage acreage block. Mal's dream was to develop a residential sewage treatment system where he could reuse the water to irrigate his beloved garden, where there were no septic odours, no septic pump outs required, a system that was safe, yet reliable, cost effective and which was easy to install and maintain.

It took 10 years of testing before Mal was happy with the end result. During this time a number of Mal's friends began asking if they could purchase a system.

From humble beginnings it didn't take long for the Ozzi Kleen system to gain a reputation as a trusted, reliable and effective system. Today, the Ozzi Kleen team couldn't be more proud of the products they produce. You can find out more about Ozzi Kleen by visiting their website – www.ozzikleen.com
